He is not gone
You can walk the wrong direction, talking about the ruin of your hope, and he will still fall in beside you. They did not know him on the road. Their hearts burned while he opened the Scriptures, and they still asked him to stay.
He took bread, blessed it, broke it — and they knew. He vanishes from sight, and he is not absent. He is known in the breaking of the bread. This is not a memory you visit. It is his presence, still, and you can meet him.

28They came near to the village where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.
29They urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over.”
30When he had sat down at the table with them, he took the bread and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave it to them.
31Their eyes were opened and they recognized him; then he vanished out of their sight.
“But if Moses and the Prophets spoke of Christ, and prophesied that through His Passion He would enter into glory, how does that man boast that he is a Christian. who neither searches how these Scriptures relate to Christ, nor desires to attain by suffering to that glory which he hopes to have with Christ.”
