The grace of the hour

Grace is one. It is God’s own life, offered — not a technique, and not a prize for the already holy. These names are not the Spirit’s seven gifts. They are what this scene is offering. A scene has a primary kind. Some offer more than one.

Received does not mean easy. Gethsemane receives the cup. Refused does not mean a person is finished: Peter refuses Sight in the courtyard and receives Mercy on the shore. They are told in the order of a Mass — first what is given into you, then what is asked of you. You do not have to know the Mass already. Watch how the gift arrives.

Healing

The grace that makes a person whole — body, mind, or the dead called back. A sign of the Kingdom: God does not despise the flesh he made.

The sick are not a lesson first. They are people he comes near. Most of these hours are miracles, but the gift is not the spectacle. It is life restored, so that a man can stand, see, speak, or go home.

It is received by asking, by being carried, or simply by being there when he speaks. Some come because they already know who he is, and a word is enough. Others cooperate without the full name yet. Need does not wait for a finished creed. He wills it, and the hour is fruitful.

Healing is almost never refused by the one who needs it. It is refused by those who do not want the cost of having him stay — comfort, livelihood, a town’s old order. Need receives. Ease sends him on.

Healing is almost never refused by the one who needs it. Pardon withers as having no need. Sight is the gift most argued over: you can know and still kill, or know and still not speak. The feast withers as wanting a different meal. The call withers as postponement more than as hatred. Mercy withers as passing by. The cup withers as seizing — a sword, a throne, a sleep, a boast.

Where both faith and surrender rise, every gift can be received: the cup, the table, the name, the neighbor, the road. Where neither is given, every gift can be refused — and Sight and the Call fill that room most. Give, not because of him is not empty of grace: jars, a beam, a lunch, a Samaritan’s oil. Trust, little asked is not empty of him: only say the word. The kinds do not replace the rooms. They name what the rooms are doing.
